Cooling Tower Water Testing

Whether you run a power plant, chemical processing facility, steel mill or manufacturing company that uses cooling towers, our team at Chardon Laboratories provides regular water testing and reporting. We check the function of your system and offer suggestions for treatment or other services based on the results found.

Why Water Testing Is Essential

Testing reveals the state of process water in your towers. Over time, untreated water endures biological contamination, such as algae and bacteria, including Legionella. These contaminants may lead to the growth of biofilms, reducing system function, including heat transfer efficiency. When airborne, they may cause health risks to surrounding people.

Water may also contain minerals that create scaling or corrosion over time. Scaling prevents the system from working effectively, and corrosion can create pitting and eventual perforation of metal surfaces in your towers.

You must also seek periodic water testing to meet regulatory standards, such as Standard 188 from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), which deals with Legionella control. Other state and local jurisdictions may have similar cooling tower testing requirements, resulting in potential fines or penalties for noncompliance.

Our Water Testing Services

At Chardon Labs, we can help you maintain critical equipment through comprehensive analysis services. We test the chemical composition and microbial presence in your water. Technicians perform titrations like calcium hardness, alkalinity and chloride. They also use color comparator tests, including chlorine, ammonia, molybdate, hydrazine and pH. We gather samples from key areas in the cooling tower, which may include the basin, drift eliminators or water distribution system.

We also employ conductivity meters to determine the concentration of ions in your system. Our experts build customized plans, testing monthly or quarterly, depending on the needs of your system and any applicable regulations.

Testing Procedures

Here’s an overview of the process we use to test water in cooling towers:

We gather representative water samples from various areas, using proper techniques, such as clean containers and careful handling, to maintain sample quality.

Once we collect samples, we can conduct basic tests on-site. We can also take samples to our laboratory for more complex tests, such as Legionella

We compare results to established guidelines and industry best practices to assess quality and pinpoint potential problems.

We can create a custom treatment plan to address biological contamination, scale or other issues.

Our electronic service reporting system gives you an e-report to inform you regarding results. This system includes an archive you can refer back to at any time.

Customized Solutions

We do more than test your water. Based on results, we can build customized cooling tower water treatment plans that address your particular quality issues. We even recommend specially designed products for treating certain conditions, such as scale, pH and bacteria.
