Boiler Water Treatment Pain Points

Boiler water treatment is critical in maintaining reliable industry operations and safeguarding equipment integrity. Treating boiler water is a complex process that can result in plant managers facing issues such as:

  • Identifying a suitable treatment program: With so many treatment options to choose from, selecting the right program for your application and system isn’t always easy. Treatment complexity can rise when you have a large or intricate boiler system.
  • Maintaining the correct chemical balance: Water pH affects the performance of all system components upstream and downstream of the boiler. Maintaining the proper pH requires routine testing and adjustment, which takes away employee time from other tasks.
  • Keeping up with regulatory compliance: Some chemical treatments must adhere to environmental regulations, which can increase the complexity of identifying the right program.
  • Training operators: Managing water treatment in-house requires setting aside time and funds to train operators in testing, treating, monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Ensuring accurate chemical feeds: You need the right tools and technical expertise to apply the right amount of chemicals to the water without overfeeding or underfeeding the system.
  • Investing in monitoring technology: Your facility will need monitors to track boiler performance, increasing overall operational costs.

The Two Biggest Challenges for Your Boiler System

Scale buildup and corrosion cause the majority of efficiency losses and unplanned downtime in industrial boiler systems. Both are preventable with the right treatment program.

Scale Buildup: The Driver of Rising Fuel Costs

Boiler scale buildup occurs when dissolved minerals, including calcium, silica and magnesium, crystallize and harden onto heat transfer surfaces. For example, 0.4 millimeters of scale can reduce efficiency by 5% while 2.4 millimeters can increase that loss to 15%. As efficiency falls, the boiler burns more fuel to reach the same output, raising operating costs and increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

Our boiler water treatment process addresses scale through controlled blowdown, polymer dispersants and phosphate-based scale inhibitors and conductivity monitoring. When scale is present, we remove it before implementing a preventive program to maintain clean heat transfer surfaces.

Corrosion: The Hidden Cause of Equipment Failure

Dissolved oxygen is the primary driver of boiler corrosion. At higher operating temperatures, oxygen reacts with iron surfaces, causing pitting and gradual metal degradation. Left unmanaged, the results are tube leaks, unplanned repairs and safety concerns for plant personnel.

Our corrosion inhibitor boiler treatment programs focus on using the right oxygen scavengers for your system, from sulfite-based compounds to organic options like DEHA and carbohydrazide. Alkaline builders manage pH to maintain the conditions needed for safe, efficient boiler operation and extended equipment life.

Is Your Boiler Operating at Peak Efficiency? [Quick Assessment]

Consider scheduling a professional boiler evaluation if any of the following warning signs describe your facility:

  • Fuel or energy costs have risen without a change in production volume
  • Routine water chemistry testing has lapsed beyond six months
  • Scale deposits are visible on heat transfer surfaces or inside the boiler drum
  • Pressure fluctuations or temperature inconsistencies have been reported
  • The boiler requires more frequent blowdown than usual, or conductivity readings are elevated
  • Metal surfaces inside the boiler show signs of pitting, rust or degradation
  • A professional boiler inspection has not been completed in the past 12 months
  • Your facility does not have a current boiler water treatment program
  • Condensate return lines show signs of corrosion or contamination
  • Boiler-related repair frequency has increased over the past year

Our Comprehensive Boiler Water Treatment Process

Our four-step approach is designed to help protect your equipment, lower operating costs and give your team full visibility into system performance:

accordion-bg-icon

We inspect your boiler inside and out using fiber-optic technology, then deliver a detailed e-report covering all findings and recommended next steps.

Our experts test boiler, makeup and feedwater samples for scale-forming minerals, dissolved oxygen, biological growth, chlorides and other contaminants affecting output and longevity.

Test results drive the plan. We select the right scale inhibitors, oxygen scavengers, alkaline builders and blowdown protocols for your water chemistry and operating demands.

All services are contracted at a transparent annual rate with no hidden fees. Chemicals are delivered directly, and a same-day e-report follows every visit, giving your team an accurate picture of system health.
